Dental Air Abrasion Care – What You Need to Know

Air or aqua abrasion is a process to remove decay from a patient’s tooth without using a dental drill. The machine blows an air or water stream of tiny aluminum oxide particle out of its tip onto the tooth. This is a procedure that doesn’t require drilling used by dentists to remove early and small areas of tooth decay and perform other procedures as well.

How Does this Procedure Work?

An instrument that works like a little sandblaster is used to spray away the decay and a stream of particles is sprayed at the decayed or stained part of the tooth. The particles are made of baking soda, aluminum oxide, silica, and are driven toward the surface of the tooth by a compressed gas or air. The decay particles are then sucked or suctioned away through a thin tube.

Is It Safe?

Air or aqua abrasion is safe, but the only precautions needed here are protective eyewear to prevent the eye irritation from the spray. There’s also the use of a rubber dam to be taken into account or a protective resin applied near the teeth and gums to protect the areas of the mouth.

Are You a Candidate for this Procedure?

This dental procedure is ideal for children and those who have minimal decay.

Other Uses of Air Abrasion:

  • Removes old composite restorations except for metallic restorations
  • Removes stains and tooth discolorations
  • Prepares the surface of the tooth for sealants or bonding

The Advantages and Disadvantages of Dental Air Abrasion

Since air abrasion is different from the traditional drilling method, you may want to speak with your dentist before resorting to this treatment.

Advantages

  • Doesn’t require an anesthetic
  • Doesn’t produce heat, sound or vibration
  • Doesn’t remove or damage healthy tooth issue
  • There’s also the less risk of fracturing the enamel

Disadvantages

  • The treatment can cause sensitivity
  • Cannot be used to repair or treat deep cavities

Just brought my little girl here for a cleaning this morning - and she had a really good experience. This was her first time at this dental office because our previous dentist retired and moved out of state, but they did a great job of making her feel calm and relaxed, giving her a "familiar" vibe, despite being in a totally unfamiliar place.

For the past few years I've been debating a tooth restoration treatment from my dentist here, and I finally took the plunge, and they look great! The reason I ended up going for it is, what's not to like? Their services are modestly priced, and the staff is loyal and friendly to their longtime customers (aka me!)

My sister in law recommended me the dentists here because she has little kids - like me - who felt nervous about going to the dentist, and said they do a great job here of easing them into the work they do, so that they feel more comfortable and open. Glad I brought them here!
