Why are misaligned teeth a problem?
Misaligned teeth can cause many difficulties if left uncorrected. Perhaps most obviously, they change the cosmetic appearance of your smile – and it’s important to be confident in your smile, whether you’re giving an important presentation at work or catching up with old friends at a school reunion.
However, misaligned teeth have several side effects outside cosmetic appearance. When your bite isn’t aligned, your teeth will hit each other when you chew or grind your teeth; as a result, your smile will start to show uneven wear, as your teeth grind and change shape. The alignment of your teeth also affects your ability to:
- Speak clearly
- Chew properly
- Protect your teeth from uneven wear through a proper bite
- Clean away plaque thoroughly when brushing and flossing
Being unable to clean your teeth thoroughly is dangerous – plaque is the number one cause of tooth loss. Plaque can lead to gum disease, which causes bleeding gums, soreness, and eventual tooth loss; it can also lead to tooth decay, which eats away at your tooth until the nerves are painfully exposed.
To care for your teeth, our trusted dentists offer high-quality dental InvisalignⓇ treatments. These can move misaligned teeth toward a healthier, straighter position, allowing you the space you need to clean them and giving you a beautifully-created smile to show off.

What is the difference between braces and InvisalignⓇ?
Braces use brackets mounted to your teeth, combined with metal wires, to straighten and align teeth. Their mechanics help correct more complex misalignments. As braces are not removable, there is no temptation for the patient (whether yourself or your child) to remove them for a few hours and possibly lose progress on their treatment.
Braces require no additional cleaning outside regular brushing and flossing but do require special attention during brushing and flossing to ensure every nook and cranny is cleaned. Braces are generally a longer treatment option – though every case is different – they can move drastically-misaligned teeth into a smooth, healthy smile. Our trusted family dentist in Hammond LA offers high-quality dental braces to cater to all client needs and preferences.
Invisalign is a removable, clear plastic piece that custom-fits over your teeth to gently guide them toward alignment. Invisalign is a subtle, comfortable, convenient way to move toward your ideal smile, and is barely noticeable.
However, Invisalign retainers must be removed before eating. Removing your Invisalign keeps it from staining, and prevents food pieces and sugars from building up inside the retainer.
Because the retainer does not allow as much saliva movement across the teeth as you would normally have if you have Invisalign, you need to brush your teeth more frequently: we recommend after every meal and snack. The retainers also must be cleaned on a daily basis to keep bacteria from building up on the inside. Therefore, we generally prefer Invisalign for adults, although every situation is different. Our Hammond orthodontics can help you decide what method is best for you or your child to create the alignment you need.
How long do braces or Invisalign take to align teeth?
Every patient is different. When you make an appointment with our professional dentists in Hammond, your dentist will recommend a treatment and discuss treatment length with you.
Generally, braces will straighten teeth in eighteen months to two years, though for some individuals the process takes longer or is shorter.
By contrast, average Invisalign treatment is twelve months – again, though, for some, it will be longer and for others will be shorter. Invisalign treatment also varies with the patient’s willingness to wear their retainer: if you lose your retainer, or forget to put it back in after a meal, your teeth may lose some of their progress and your treatment may be longer than expected.
Regardless of which method you choose, our dentists can walk you through the process to a healthy smile. Check with your dentist to find out how long your treatment will be and how to best care for your teeth during your treatment.
