dental implants hammondIf you’ve lost one (or several) teeth, dental implants provide a lasting, quality treatment that will allow you to smile and eat as if you still had your original teeth. Our dental implant treatments in Hammond comprise of restorations to bring back the health of your teeth. You can talk with our dentists at Advanced Dental Concepts
to determine whether or not an implant is right for you.

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an anchor that can hold an artificial tooth in your mouth so that you can continue to eat and speak as if you’d never lost your tooth.

Teeth naturally grow in with “roots” – an extension of the tooth that grows down into the jawbone, to anchor your tooth in your mouth. When you lose a tooth and its root, you don’t just lose the tooth; you also start to lose bone structure in your jawbone. This can result in a change of your facial structure and loss in bone strength in your jaw.

In addition, the gap left from tooth loss can encourage your surrounding teeth to lean and move to fill the gap, causing misalignment and long-term problems. When teeth are misaligned, they can block floss or toothbrushes from being able to clean the whole tooth, and harbor plaque and bacteria after meals.

To combat these difficulties, a dental implant can be inserted into your jawbone to rebuild your jaw’s bone structure as well as to anchor a new tooth.

A dental implant involves inserting an imitation of a tooth root – made of titanium – into the jaw so that the jawbone can grow around the metal and retain its shape. Then, an artificial tooth is placed on the surface, to fill the gap in your smile and keep your teeth aligned properly.

Why not dentures?

Talk with your dentist about whether implants or dentures are the better choices for your mouth. Many people consider implants to be more convenient, as they remain in your mouth like a natural tooth and don’t require specialized cleaning. However, every situation is different. Come into our office and talk with our trusted dental team to discover what would best preserve your oral health.

How do I know if I need a dental implant?

A dental implant is essential if you’ve lost teeth. While a lost tooth may seem like simply a cosmetic issue, it has deeper complications: a lost tooth can result in:

  • Lost jawbone structure
  • A loss of your natural smile shape, which can change your appearance as well as create areas that are harder to keep clean and healthy in your mouth
  • Difficulty in speaking
  • Difficulty in chewing (and getting good nutrition)
  • More vulnerable gums, that may become infected with bacteria

If you think you may need a dental implant, set up an appointment with our trusted dental service. Our dental implant treatments restore your teeth and bring back your oral health, and our team will be happy to look at your oral health and answer any questions you may have about dental implants. We also offer reliable Hammond dental bridges if you’re seeking other options for your teeth.

Does it hurt to get an implant?

We take pride in our quality care for our patients. This recommended treatment is usually performed under local anesthetic (numbing), so there should be no pain during the treatment. While you may be sore for a couple days after the procedure, it shouldn’t be much – about the same soreness as a routine tooth extraction. If you experience pain after the procedure, you can place a cold ice pack over the area where your tooth was extracted to relieve the pain and swelling.

  • Our dental treatments in Hammond include teeth restoration and reliable dental implants, to bring back the shape and health of your unique smile.
  • Dental implants can strengthen your tooth alignment, prevent jaw bone loss, and protect your gums from infection. See one of our family dentists to find out whether you qualify for an implant.
  • If you have questions, our dental team would be happy to discuss the benefits of efficient tooth implants with you.

How do I care for my implant?

Just like natural teeth, implants need to be brushed and flossed. That’s because plaque – the thin film left behind after eating that carries bacteria – forms on both natural teeth and implants. While your implant won’t decay, your gums can still become infected with gum disease.

To avoid allowing bacteria to enter your gums, you’ll need to continue a dentist-recommended hygiene routine.

Here is what we generally recommend:

  • Brush your teeth at least twice per day with a fluoride-based toothpaste
  • Change our toothbrush when the bristles start to fray or every couple of months
  • Floss your teeth at least once per day
  • When convenient, brush – and floss, if you can – after meals and snacks, to remove food and plaque immediately
  • See your dentist at least every six months to check in on any unseen problems

Just brought my little girl here for a cleaning this morning - and she had a really good experience. This was her first time at this dental office because our previous dentist retired and moved out of state, but they did a great job of making her feel calm and relaxed, giving her a "familiar" vibe, despite being in a totally unfamiliar place.

For the past few years I've been debating a tooth restoration treatment from my dentist here, and I finally took the plunge, and they look great! The reason I ended up going for it is, what's not to like? Their services are modestly priced, and the staff is loyal and friendly to their longtime customers (aka me!)

My sister in law recommended me the dentists here because she has little kids - like me - who felt nervous about going to the dentist, and said they do a great job here of easing them into the work they do, so that they feel more comfortable and open. Glad I brought them here!
