Invisalign is a corrective treatment that is designed to offer an alternative to traditional braces. However, is it the right option for your needs? Ultimately, you will need to consult your dentist in order to determine if Invisalign is the right solution to correct your teeth. However, here are a few things to consider before you schedule an appointment.
Are your looks important to you?
If you are worried about your experience while you are undergoing a corrective treatment for your teeth, Invisalign might be the right option for you. With traditional braces, you will have to deal with metal braces which can be unsightly and make you feel uncomfortable about your smile. If you are no longer a teenager, then you might feel anxious about wearing metal braces. In addition, they can be disruptive to your normal life, making it difficult for you to enjoy your favorite foods. Traditional braces also can’t be removed until the course of treatment is complete.
In contrast, Invisalign aligners are clear and you don’t have to be embarrassed about wearing the aligners because they aren’t very noticeable when you smile. When you want to eat, simply remove the aligners and then replace them after you have brushed. With Invisalign, you never have to worry about taking photographs or your smile.
Can you handle the responsibility of maintaining your aligners?
Invisalign can require some additional responsibility that you will have to get used to. Since your aligners are removable, you will need to make sure that you don’t lose them. You will have to clean them on a regular basis. If you think that you will not be able to do these things or you simply won’t have time, then Invisalign may not be a better option for you as compared to traditional braces. However, if you like having a convenient, flexible option, Invisalign offers many advantages.
Do you have major issues that need to be corrected?
Invisalign is not designed to correct all problems that can occur with misaligned teeth. Generally, if the problems with your teeth are minor, you can successfully use Invisalign to treat your problems. However, for more severe cases, traditional braces are recommended. However, only your dentist will be able to determine which options are available to you with a consultation.
Older teenagers and adults make good candidates for Invisalign. However, children and young teenagers should generally opt for traditional braces since the jawbone and teeth are not yet fully developed.
Do you need to be reminded to wear your aligners?
Invisalign is only effective if you wear the aligners at least 22 hours per day. While you can remove them to eat, drink and brush your teeth, if you are not wearing them as often as you should, you could derail the course of your treatment. In addition to making the treatment ineffective, failing to wear your aligners may also make your treatment take longer than it should. You must be disciplined in order to effectively use Invisalign.
If you don’t think that you will be able to keep up with your Invisalign treatment or you think that you will be tempted to remove them often, you may want to instead consider traditional braces to ensure that your treatment is finished as quickly as possible.
