How Do Sealants Keep Our Teeth Protected?
Teeth sealants are coatings made of plastic that are placed on the occlusal or chewing part of the back teeth; they are responsible for protecting our teeth from decay. Cavity sealants are usually placed on fissure of the first molar tooth, once the chewing part has already been erupted and went beyond the gum. Once this chewing area is sealed, the tooth coating will help protect it.
Fissures that occur on our molars can be accumulated by bacteria. The deeper and narrower the fissure is, the harder it is to clean it. Fluoride in our toothpaste keeps decay at bay, but dental sealants serve as extra protection for our teeth.
To protect the teeth that are most prone to dental decay, Advanced Dental Concepts may apply a dental sealant. It’s a tooth-colored or clear plastic material that is applied to the chewing surfaces of the back teeth. Sealants will create a smooth surface over the pits and grooves of these teeth. Sealants can be kept clean through proper oral hygiene care in Hammond LA which will be taught by our dentist to maintain the sealants clean.
Do they hurt?
Just like with most dental procedures, the fear of the treatment hurting us is very common. It is very understandable to be nervous about dental treatments with which you have no prior experience. The good news is that this particular procedure is painless.
In fact, this will only take a couple of minutes and you’re good to go!
How long do they last?
With proper care, the sealants can last for up to ten years. They are not required to be removed because they gradually wear away over time and once it does, it’s your cue to get another one.
Still, the hardened plastic material will hold well as long as you are maintaining your oral health well also.
